Getting Paralegal Certification in New York

Paralegals help lawyers with many different aspects of their jobs. We already know that It’s relatively easy to enter the paralegal field in New York, especially if you’re dedicated to the profession. The more education you get, the more likely you’ll land higher paying jobs in the field.

You should be aware that you can become a paralegal without certification. You’ll just need to have plenty of experience in the field.  However, it’s best that you get a paralegal certification in New York. Your resume will stand out better than those without certifications.

There are a range of choices if you’re looking to get a paralegal certification in New York.  You can choose to attend an offline college or online course if you have a busy schedule.  Just make sure that you attend a reputable program, or the paralegal certificate won’t mean much to potential employers.

There are a few national organizations that offer certifications. Certifications by these organizations will mean a lot when looking to land a job. Some of the organizations that you should be concerned with include the American Alliance of Paralegals, the National Association of Legal Assistants, and the National Federation of Paralegal Associations.

Associate’s or Bachelor’s

If you’re looking for an entry-level job, then you should look to obtain a basic paralegal certificate in New York. You can take a course that will cram a lot of material into shorter sessions so that you can get your certificate much faster. These courses can usually be completed in anywhere from nine months to just under two years.

You can also go a step further and get an Associate’s degree to become a paralegal. You will need to study for three or three years in order to obtain this degree though. However, you’ll be qualified to get more positions than you would with a basic certificate.

If you want to go even further to get a paralegal certification in New York, you could opt to get a Bachelor’s degree. This is by far the longest road to become a paralegal, taking about four years to complete. However, with this degree, you’ll be the most qualified amongst your peers.

Paralegals are very much in demand nowadays, especially in big metropolitan areas like New York. After getting your degree or certificate, you should have little trouble finding a job.  Just make sure that you obtain a certificate from a reputable program or else potential employers will take it with a grain of salt.
